In a blistering letter to U.S. bishops, Pope Francis has issued a powerful condemnation of Donald Trump’s mass deportation efforts, calling them a “major crisis” that demands immediate action.

For far too long, Donald Trump and his far-right supporters have twisted religion to justify hateful, divisive policies, claiming it’s all part of God’s plan. But let’s be clear: it’s never been God’s plan to strip women of their right to choose, nor has it been God’s plan to deport people who are simply seeking a better life. These are the plans of the far-right—and nothing more.

Pope Francis sees through this distortion of faith.

Pope Francis is unwavering in his defense of migrants, decrying the criminalization of those who are only guilty of fleeing hardship and seeking safety. His message couldn’t be clearer: we must resist the demonization of migrants and refugees. We must not turn our backs on them—we must accept them, because they are part of God’s plan.

“I exhort all the faithful of the Catholic Church, and all the men and women of good will, not to give in to narratives that discriminate against and cause unnecessary suffering to our migrant and refugee brothers and sisters,” he wrote.

I agree with Pope Francis. My faith guides me—it teaches me that we must fight for our neighbors and lift up every community, no matter their background, their beliefs, or their struggles. This includes protecting the fundamental freedoms of every person, from a woman’s right to choose to the freedom to love.

This fight has never been more urgent. It’s time we reject the dangerous narrative the far-right is pushing—that to be truly faithful, you must abandon your values and support an extremist agenda that strips away the rights of every American. This is a blatant weaponization of religion for political gain, and it must be stopped.

No matter who you choose pray to—or choose not to pray to at all, I urge you to heed Pope Francis’ call. Do not give in to the toxic demands of Donald Trump and his far-right machine. We must push back.
