Mexico Fights Back: Sues Google Over Gulf Name Change.

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced she may take legal action against Google for renaming the Gulf of Mexico in Google Maps.

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum has urgently declared that her administration is considering legal action against Google, emphasizing that the tech giant has no right to alter the name of Mexico’s continental shelf. "Google has no right to rename Mexico’s continental shelf," Sheinbaum stated in a press conference on Monday, asserting that if the company does not reverse its decision, the government will proceed with a lawsuit.

The controversy stems from Google’s decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico on its platform, Google Maps, following a controversial executive order signed U.S. President Donald Trump, which renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America" in U.S. territory. Mexico vehemently objects to this move, arguing that it infringes on its sovereignty.

While the United States has jurisdiction over just 46% of the Gulf, the majority of it—over half—is under Mexican control. Moreover, the name "Gulf of Mexico" has been in use since 1607 and is recognized by the United Nations.

Sheinbaum stressed that for Google to change the name based on an executive order issued by Trump, who has control over a mere fraction of the Gulf, is not only unlawful but an affront to Mexico’s territorial rights.

Sheinbaum’s opposition to the name change is grounded in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, which establishes that a nation’s territorial sovereignty extends only 12 nautical miles from its coastline.

Under international law, if a country seeks to alter the designation of a body of water, such changes are only applicable within the 12 nautical miles of its territorial waters. This rule does not extend to the broader area, such as the Gulf of Mexico, which spans beyond these limits.
