Behind the Scenes at the Historic Democratic Convention: A Content Creator's Perspective
For the first time in history, the Democratic National Convention extended an unprecedented invitation to two-hundred social media content creators, bringing forth a new era of digital engagement and
Within the heart of the Democratic National Convention, the ‘creator lounge’ emerged as a vital hub. This dedicated space was more than just a room—it was a sanctuary for creators from across the country, a base where they could strategize, collaborate, and recharge between capturing the electrifying moments of the convention. Though modest in appearance, it was a haven for innovation, a stark contrast to the opulent lounges reserved by organizations during the convention.
The exclusivity of this opportunity was staggering.
Less than 0.00006% of content creators would experience this year’s historic floor at the Democratic National Convention, where delegates gathered to shape the future of the nation. I was fortunate enough to be among this fraction, a privilege that filled me with an exhilarating sense of purpose.
When not in the creator lounge, I traversed the expanse of the convention center, my mission clear: to capture the spirit of the event and the people who made it unforgettable. My efforts bore fruit as I managed to meet and film with remarkable figures such as Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, the Grammy-winning star Billy Porter, and the First Lady of Minnesota, Gwen Walz, among many others. Each encounter was a thrilling testament to the energy behind the convention.
As I meandered through the convention center, I was struck by an atmosphere unlike any I had witnessed at political rallies before.
The energy was palpable, a mosaic of enthusiasm and unity.
People from all walks of life came together, proudly representing their communities in a kaleidoscope of colors and symbols—Wisconsinites sported cheese-shaped hats, while Kansans flaunted their Kansas City Chiefs jerseys. In stark contrast to the Republican National Convention, where state pride seemed nonexistent, the Democrats embraced their regional identities with an exuberance that was both refreshing and inspiring.
This was not just a convention; it was a celebration of diversity and a collective spirit that united us all.
I forged countless friendships with an incredible array of individuals. I connected with union activists who harnessed the power of online content to champion the rights of workers, fighting for justice and change through their digital platforms. I also met dancers, who had never before engaged in the political arena but were stepping boldly off the sidelines to lend their voices and creativity to this election.
Our group of content creators displayed various talents and expertise, each bringing a unique perspective to the convention. From seasoned industry professionals to passionate newcomers, our collective energy was a testament to the power of diverse voices coming together for a common cause.
When people asked about the kind of content I create, I would respond with a nod to the legendary John Lewis, saying, “I cause good trouble online.”
This phrase, inspired by the trailblazing congressman’s call to action, encapsulated my mission: to use my platform to stir meaningful conversation, inspire change, and contribute to the mosaic of voices at the Democratic National Convention
Each evening at the Democratic National Convention was a showcase of conviction and vision, as elected leaders took the stage to articulate their values and advocate for their constituents. From Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, representatives from every corner of the country shared their perspectives, reflecting the diverse range of American voices.
Recognizing the profound impact these speeches would have, and their potential to create compelling and inspiring content, the convention organizers thoughtfully designated a special area for us—content creators. This 'creator platform' was a striking, bright blue stage positioned prominently on the convention floor. It was designed not just for visibility but for accessibility, allowing us to capture the essence of these pivotal moments without being overwhelmed by the crowd.
This platform was more than just a physical space; it was a symbol of the convention’s commitment to amplifying our voices and ensuring that the powerful messages delivered on stage reached a wider audience through our creative lenses. It was here, on this vibrant stage, that we could best capture and share the stirring speeches that defined the spirit of the event, bringing their significance to life for viewers across the nation.
The warmth and inclusivity of this overall experience and the details such as offering a creator platform—bringing together a myriad of digital voices—was made possible by the tireless dedication of volunteers and staff who uplifted the Democratic National Convention.
Nachelle Alonzo, @OGoftheHRC, said "We witnessed not only history but a nonstop feeling of joy, hope and excitement that we haven’t felt for quite sometime. You couldn’t help but be happy in that arena. From day one to day four, it ran like a well oiled machine, no protest or missed opportunities, just happiness and ease."
Sari Beth Rosenberg, @SariBethRose, said "We weren’t just a part of history but making history. All the energy coming into the week exploded into four days of hope and pride in this country and our dream of getting closer to achieving a multiracial democracy. One where we are all safe and secure and free to be who we are achieve our dreams. Now let’s channel it into Election Day!"
Clearly, the support of volunteers and staff was invaluable.
However, it was deeply disheartening to witness the conditions under which some of these dedicated volunteers and staff had to work. The issue wasn’t with the Democratic National Convention or content creator, which were both exemplary in their organization and hospitality to everyone, but with the way a few members of the traditional press treated and disrespected volunteers and staff.
I remember one poignant moment when a young staffer was left in tears after being overwhelmed and mistreated by a press member. Seeing her distress, my fellow creators and I rallied to offer some love—buying her a meal and helping her regain her composure.
It is crucial to treat those who make these grand events possible with the respect and kindness they deserve. Yet, at this event, some in the traditional press seemed to feel entitled to special treatment, overlooking the fact that it is the collective effort and respect for everyone involved that truly makes an event like this shine. The experience underscored the need for empathy and appreciation for all those behind the scenes who contribute so much to the success of such monumental occasions.
Our collective mission is rooted in restoring respect to the heart of America. We are dedicated to supporting Vice President Kamala Harris in her campaign to become the next President of the United States because she embodies a deep respect for our country—and in turn, America holds that respect for her.
This was the shared understanding among content creators who were invited to attend the Democratic National Convention.
The turn from the last umpteen years to an explosion of joy and celebration feels like I’ve been holding my breath through 44 years of Republican control politics. My mood was so cynical, like sour persimmons, until the Joe Biden master stroke like a catalyst that fired up our engines. Since that extraordinary Sunday, it seems like the black clouds are dissipating at last. It’s been a long time coming.
The 2024 Democratic National Convention from Day 1 was instantly historical. Conventions aren’t usually a four part streaming series but it was. An incredible experience with viewing numbers more like a Marvel Comics miniseries. Yet it was entirely professional. No fake moments or manufactured enthusiasm, only an organic, real, happy four days.
I can’t wait for the sequel!
Thanks, Johnny! 👏👏
